Spoof

Definition

Spoof is a type of story which has a twist (funny part in the end of the story). It contains an unpredictable event which makes the story funny. The main character of twist in a funny story should be unpredictable and funny.

Generic Structure

1. Orientation : the opening of the story which sets the scene.

2. Events : the details of the events in the story.

3. Twist : the funny or unpredictable ending of the story.

Examples :

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Taxi Driver

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is waiting at a taxi stand outside the railway station in Paris. When a taxi pulls up, he puts his suitcase in the front seat and gets in the back. As he is about to tell the taxi-driver where he wants to go to, driver asks him,” where can I take you, Mr. Doyle ?”

Doyle is flabbergasted. He asks the driver whether he know him by sight. The driver says,”No, Sir. I have never seen you before.” The puzzled Doyle asks him what makes him think that he is Conan Doyle. The driver replies, “ This morning’s paper had a story about you being on vacation in Mersailles. This is the taxi stand where people who return from Mersailles always come to. Your skin color tells me you have been on vacation. The ink-spot on your right index finger suggets to me that you are a writer. Your clothing is very English, and not French. Adding up all those pieces of information, I deduce that you are Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.”

Doyle says,” this is a truly amazing deduction. You are a real – life counter-part to my fictional creation. Sherlock Holmes”

“There is one other thing,” the driver says.
“What is that ?” Doyle asks.
“Your name,” the driver replies, “ is on the front of your suitcase.”

Private Converstion

Last week I went to the theatre. I had a very good seat. The play was very interesting.I did not enjoy it. A young man and a young woman were sitting behind me. They were talking very loudly.I got very angry. I could not hear the actors. I turned around. I looked at the man and the young woman angrily. They did not pay any attention.In the end, I could not bear it. I turned around again. “I could not hear a word” I said angrily.“It’s none of your business” the young man said rudely.

2. Develop the Outline into good story. The writing should be original.
